Death lost the war over 2,000 years ago.
It began, first, with a woman named Mary. Soon to be married to a man named Joseph, she was a law-abiding woman living in Nazareth with a heart for God. It was on a seemingly average day when the angel Gabriel appeared before her, with great news.
“Do not be afraid, Mary; You have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” – Gabriel, Luke 1:30-33
Mary, astonished, questions Gabriel: “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” (Luke 1:34).
“And the angel answered her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.’” – Luke 1:35-37
Mary accepts and firmly states…
“Behold, I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” – Mary, Luke 1:38
This was the start of the supernatural conception of Jesus Christ, born to a virgin, the Son of God. His human form was made manifest through the power of the Holy Spirit in a miraculous showcase of God’s almighty power.
The birth, then, happened in the lowly town of Bethlehem. Born in a manger, God’s very son came to us humble. At his birth, the angels sing, as the prophecy of Micah 5:2 is fulfilled.
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” – Luke 2:14
Christ’s birth began the turning point for all sinners, the beginning of reconciliation. Humanity and God were forever reunited, a relationship forever changed, mended through the eventual sacrifice.
The birth of Christ is the greatest day in history. His birth brought about immeasurable miracles and our salvation. He would fulfill all the prophecies of the messiah. He would let the deaf hear, he would make the blind see, he would raise the dead. He would die for us that we could live with him eternal.
“Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.” – John 21:25
Jesus lived the perfect life that we couldn’t so that we may enter Heaven. He suffered so much pain for our sake, bearing the painful death upon the cross. We will never deserve our Savior, yet alive he stands! Let us rejoice at the resurrection of Christ!
“He is not here, but has risen.” – Luke 24:6
This is the ultimate meaning of Christmas, God’s love for us. The salvation he provided us with grace through his son Jesus Christ.
